March 2013 - The Flyers Mite A team traveled to Wisconsin Dells for an end-of-season tournament and had a very successful time going 4-0 and taking 1st Place and the Championship Trophy! Nice strong finish to end the year together.
Flyers defeat Peoria Rivermen 7-0!
Congratulations to the Flyers' Midget #1 team for taking first place in the NIHL Midget A division. Coach T's team compiled a 19-3-1 record in a tightly contested division to take home the President's Cup banner. Way to go Flyers! Good luck in the State championships!
The squirt AA team played an outstanding tournament in Somerset, Wisconsin over the MLK weekend, finishing in 2nd place.
The Flyers beat the Highland, Minnesota Blue team 5-1 and the North St. Paul team 5-1. In the championship game, the Flyers played a very talented Osseo/Maple Grove team. The pace of the game was fast and furious as the Flyers battled to tie the game 1-1 on an unassisted goal by Cole Laden in the 3rd period. Minutes later, Osseo/Maple Grove scored the winning goal and defended a final onslaught as the Flyers pulled goalie Jakob Malasig and sent out 6 attackers, ultimately coming up short and losing 2-1.
There were 5 teams from Minnesota and 2 teams from northern Wisconsin in the tournament. Because of a July 1 birthday cut off in Minnesota and Wisconsin, our team of 2003’s were matched against predominantly 2002 and 2001 players, and they more than held there own.
There was a lot of great hockey played, as well as the customary hotel shinny games and some pool time. We also managed to squeeze in a team outing to a Minnesota Wild game vs. the Dallas Stars. All in all, it was a wonderful weekend!
Former Flyer Trevor Sabo was named top player of the game on November 17th. Sabo played for the Flyers from Mite through two years of Midget. He went on to play for the Wisconsin Rampage (Great Lakes Junior Hockey League) in Pleasant Prairie, WI last year and moved to Minnesota to play for the Rochester Ice Hawks (Wisconsin Junior Hockey League) this season. Sabo’s brother, Evan, is still with the Skokie program, also playing from Mite and now in his second year playing for Midget Coach Mike Tompkins. See the Rochester Post-Bulletin article with the game highlights.
